Certificates
General
The certificates required for the installation of software basically serve to protect the user from possible malware.
However, this does not mean that the software has been checked in any way by a certification body!
Certificates generally only guarantee that the software originates from the specified sender!
The Microsoft Store of course offers the additional security that Microsoft has checked this software.
Why these direct download versions at all?
DSS-4K and LVRC were originally created using traditional WPF technology, which unfortunately has significant issues with 4K video playback.
However, the modern UWP [Universal Windows Platform] technology now used has a whole range of restrictions for security reasons that make it difficult to use as a desktop app:
* DSS-4K: the key combination 'Alt'+'F9' for launching an external recording tool has been blocked
* DSS-4K, LVRC and EDPE: after selecting a file, the corresponding folder often had to be selected again
Fortunately, special permits have now been issued for DSS-4K and LVRC!!
------
However, there are still problems with starting an external program library, which is required for lossless video editing.
Until then, I unfortunately have to the necessary signing of the app for the installation myself. I hope that you have the necessary confidence!
Self-Signed Certificates
Certificates from public certification authorities that are suitable for signing software are extremely expensive, so that only larger companies can normally afford them.
The self-signed certificate used here offers the same protection against manipulation as official certificates [same technology, SHA256 encryption].
Your security for the authenticity of the certificate:
* can be downloaded directly from the corresponding MS Store apps
* is carried out via this 'https' secured website 'ht-mm.de' [with official certificate 'digicert']
Certificates are valid for one year in principle, but once signed software works beyond that [timestamp from 'digicert.com']!
The public key must be manually installed on the PC once a year [e.g. when reinstalling or updating an app].
